For years now, a group of people have been mistakenly contacting me as part of their email forwards that they send back and forth to each other.

This group, as it so happens, is conservative. I’ve received the types of emails you might expect that paint liberal politicians in a negative light as well as emails that border on fear and hate mongering.

From the very beginning, I politely emailed the group asking them to remove me from their list. They did not oblige. So, I scaled up my tactics. Once, I sent an over-the-top reply, hoping that they would remove me out of spite. It did not work. On an old computer, I set a rule in my mailbox to forward their forwards back to them ten times for each one that I received. Still, no luck.

At least five or so years later, I continue to receive these emails. Usually, I ignore them or send them to spam. I simply could not do so today.

The most recent email I received came from Hugh O. Nash, Jr., a consulting electrical engineer from Tennessee and possible author.

The email from Mr. Nash contained the subject line: “Where not to shop.” The first line of the forward read, “Americans Can Now Determine Where To Shop And Spend Their Money………”

I’m unsure why the statement needed three sets of ellipses. Perhaps the author kept falling asleep or getting distracted?

This is a very minor issue when compared to the discrepancy between the subject and the lede of the message itself. Americans can choose where to shop but cannot shop at these locations.

Why can’t we shop at certain places? Well, because they donate money to Democrats, of course! My favorite stat from the message:

Waffle House donated $279K, 100% went to Republicans

Mr. Nash kindly asked that I forward this email to my conservative friends. The forward ended by reiterating the same message. What a small target audience I would reach by doing that, though! It would be much more effective if I shared this message in a public forum, wouldn’t it, Mr. Nash?

We could reach more people this way. After all, you do want your message to get out, do you not?

Please forward to your conservative friends.

Personally, I tend not to concern myself with politics. I believe that neither Democrats nor Republicans are correct. What I believe is that, until we come together as a nation and work as one, we will never resolve any of the real issues that plague us.

I fully admit that I briefly boycotted Chick-fil-A due to S. Truett Cathy’s beliefs regarding homosexuals because I believed it infringed upon human rights. I will also admit that the responses people gave to unfortunate Chick-fil-A employees, like the guy who hassled a poor lady at the drive-thru were also inappropriate.

This sort of frivolous boycotting that Mr. Nash encourages is nothing shy of childish and petty. Again, it solves no problems — but neither does publicly ridiculing Mr. Nash, even if the email did twice state to pass the message along.

I just find it unfortunate that people cannot realize the paradoxical nature of such opinions. It’s sad that we will find any excuse to hate, ridicule, discriminate and segregate, even if the excuse fails basic logic tests.
