Great Odin’s Raven, Thor’s a Woman!

Marvel raised a stir (which is exactly what they intended to do) when they announced yesterday that Thor would now be a lady. The announcement was made by Whoopi Goldberg on The View, which is kinda weird, but oooookay.  In everyone’s rush to overreact and scream about just how much they hate change, they forgot to note the following things:

  • Male Thor isn’t going anywhere, he’s just not using his big ass hammer, Mjolnir, anymore.
  • This isn’t the first time that Thor has been replaced in such a manner. An alien did it back in the 80s! People love Beta Ray Bill!
  • This isn’t even the first time we’ve seen a woman in Thor’s clothing. I immediately thought of Thor Girl from Dan Slott’s Avengers: The Initiative.

And it’s not like this is the first female version of a male character. Sure, Jason Aaron said that this isn’t “She-Thor, Lady Thor, or Thorita” over on Marvel.com, but that’s not going to keep people from thinking of her like that. Here’s just a few:

  • Batgirl
  • Batwoman
  • Supergirl
  • Spider-Woman (2 or 3 of ‘em at least!)
  • Spider-Girl
  • She-Hulk

The list goes on. For fuck’s sake, Loki was just a woman a few years back. To sum it all up: stop whining!

People complained about a black Spider-man being a mere PC move before finding out that Miles Morales is awesome. Give the story a chance. Jason Aaron is a damn good writer and knows what he’s doing. The man brought us Wolverine and the X-Men and has been doing a great job with the god of thunder on his current title. Aaron knows what’s up.

Besides, this is the comic book industry, where the return to the status quo is inevitable. When is the next Thor solo movie out? I don’t want to be a cynic, but it’s happened again and again and again. Wolverine’s supposedly dying soon and I’m already antsy to place a bet on his return. It has happened before and it will happen again, so relax and enjoy the ride.
