Curb Your Porn Enthusiasm

This is your brain before porn.

According to an infographic posted on Huffington Post last year, porn sites averaged 450 million unique visitors per month. The average visitor spent roughly 12 sweaty, fist-pumping minutes on porn sites somewhere around 7.5 times per month.

The infographic also stated that 70% of men and 30% of women viewed porn. To further extrapolate those statistics, 30% of men and 70% of women are full of shit.

The porn industry is big. Like John Holmes big. We all know this. What we are now learning though, is that porn may cause shrinkage, but not in the Seinfeld way.

Two days ago, The Guardian published an article that suggested there is a link between prolonged viewing of porn leads to reduced gray matter. This evidence came from a study conducted by the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin.1

From the article:

“Our findings indicated that grey matter volume of the right caudate of the striatum is smaller with higher pornography use,” the researchers said.

Furthermore, when sexually explicit material was shown, the men’s MRIs showed diminished function in a part of the brain that processes motivation.

But were men with smaller striatums seeking more porn, or did more porn make the brain smaller? Was it a consequence, or a precondition?

“Individuals with lower striatum volume may need more external stimulation to experience pleasure and might therefore experience pornography consumption as more rewarding, which may in turn lead to [more porn watching],” said the authors, concluding that more study is needed.

Grey matter is integral to the central nervous system. It has a hand in controlling things like, you know, speech, memory, hearing, vision and muscle control.

So, does that make the old wives’ tail true? Will masturbating make you go blind? Not according to Planned Parenthood.

“The myth is that masturbation makes you blind, crazy, or stupid, damages your sex organs, or stunts your growth. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Masturbation is not emotionally or physically harmful in any way. In fact, it has a number of physical and mental health benefits,” according to the site.

The Max Planck Institute could eventually prove that masturbation in conjunction with prolonged porn watching might have harmful side effects.

Maybe the side effects are related to the poor quality of writing and plot holes. Just to be safe, this study should be conducted on people who have prolonged exposure too Michael Bay movies.
